Actor Reg E. Cathey, better known for his roles in the hit Netflix drama “House of Cards” and the HBO series “The Wire,” has died.
Despite not appearing in the first season of Luke Cage, Marvel has now revealed Cathey filmed scenes as Luke’s father James Lucas for the forthcoming second run before his death, and that these scenes will air posthumously later this year as Reg’s “final performance”.

His death was announced Friday night by David Simon, the creator of “The Wire,” who paid tribute to the late 59-year-old actor on Twitter.
“It was an honour to work with him and to know him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. In Marvel’s Luke Cage season 2, Reg played James Lucas, Luke’s father. We were lucky enough to experience the magic that was Reg in his final performance.”

More details of Cathey’s passing, including the circumstances surrounding his death, were not immediately available.
The Huntsville, Alabama, native was born into a military family in August of 1958. He took an interest in theater at the age of 9 after attending a United Service Organization show in West Germany, where he was raised.
Over more than three decades, Cathey was praised for his commanding baritone voice and the unexpected sense of humor he brought to his roles.
He also appeared in two HBO series — “The Wire” as Normal Wilson, a Baltimore political operative and in “Oz,” where he starred as warden Martin Querns.
He also had roles in several network TV series such as “Law & Order,” “30 Rock,” “Grimm,” and in movies like “Fantastic Four” and “Hands of Stone.”
In 2015, he won an Emmy for his role in “House of Cards” as Freddy Hayes, the owner of a barbecue restaurant that Kevin Spacey’s character Frank Underwood often visited.
Netflix issued a statement Friday saying employees were heartbroken by Cathey’s passing.
“Reg was the kindest man, the most giving actor, a true gentlemen. Our sympathy goes to his family,” the statement said.

Cathey was known for his portrayal of the character of Freddy Hayes on “House of Cards,” where he played the owner of a barbecue joint who eventually ends up in the White House with a high-profile job. He won an Emmy for the role in 2015 and was nominated for three consecutive years for the show.

Actor Reg E. Cathey passes away at the age of 59 after battling cancer, according to Variety.
Cathey is best-known for his roles as Norman Wilson in The Wire, Martin Querns in Oz, and Freddy Hayes in House of Cards – the latter of which earned him three Emmy Award nominations, with a win in 2015.
For comic book fans, Cathey was a frequent actor in various adaptations. Cathey played Freeze opposite Jim Carrey in 1994's The Mask, Deetee in 1995's Tank Girl, and Dr. Franklin Storm in 2015's Fantastic Four. The 59-year-old actor recently completed filming the second season of Netflix's Luke Cage, where he played the titular character's father, James Lucas.
